چکیده

ECOLOGY Correction for “Recovery of a top predator mediates negative eutrophic effects on seagrass,” by Brent B. Hughes, Ron Eby, Eric Van Dyke, M. Tim Tinker, Corina I. Marks, Kenneth S. Johnson, and Kerstin Wasson, which appeared in issue 38, September 17, 2013, of Proc Natl Acad Sci USA (110:15313–15318; first published August 27, 2013; 10.1073/pnas.1302805110). The authors note that Fig. 2 appeared incorrectly. The authors note that they “unintentionally labeled Fig. 2C ‘Grazer biomass (g DW) *shoot (cm)’ instead of ‘Grazer biomass (mg DW) *shoot (cm).’ ” The corrected figure and its legend appear below. This error does not affect the conclusions of the article.

Mapping the interaction site for a β-scorpion toxin in the pore module of domain III of voltage-gated Na(+) channels.

Activation of voltage-gated sodium (Na(v)) channels initiates and propagates action potentials in electrically excitable cells. β-Scorpion toxins, including toxin IV from Centruroides suffusus suffusus (CssIV), enhance activation of Na(V) channels. CssIV stabilizes the voltage sensor in domain II in its activated state via a voltage-sensor trapping mechanism. Amino acid residues required for th...

Binding modes and functional surface of anti-mammalian scorpion α-toxins to sodium channels.

Scorpion α-toxins bind to the voltage-sensing domains of voltage-gated sodium (Na(V)) channels and interfere with the inactivation mechanisms. The functional surface of α-toxins has been shown to contain an NC-domain consisting of the five-residue turn (positions 8-12) and the C-terminus (positions 56-64) and a core-domain centered on the residue 18. The NC- and core-domains are interconnected ...

A surface plasmon resonance approach to monitor toxin interactions with an isolated voltage-gated sodium channel paddle motif

Animal toxins that inhibit voltage-gated sodium (Na(v)) channel fast inactivation can do so through an interaction with the S3b-S4 helix-turn-helix region, or paddle motif, located in the domain IV voltage sensor. Here, we used surface plasmon resonance (SPR), an optical approach that uses polarized light to measure the refractive index near a sensor surface to which a molecule of interest is a...

Modular organization of α-toxins from scorpion venom mirrors domain structure of their targets, sodium channels.

To gain success in the evolutionary "arms race," venomous animals such as scorpions produce diverse neurotoxins selected to hit targets in the nervous system of prey. Scorpion α-toxins affect insect and/or mammalian voltage-gated sodium channels (Na(v)s) and thereby modify the excitability of muscle and nerve cells. Although more than 100 α-toxins are known and a number of them have been studie...

Inhibition of neuronal tetrodotoxin-sensitive Na+ channels by two spider toxins: hainantoxin-III and hainantoxin-IV.

Hainantoxin-III and hainantoxin-IV, isolated from the venom of the Chinese bird spider Seleconosmia hainana, are neurotoxic peptides composed of 33-35 residues with three disulfide bonds. Using whole-cell patch-clamp technique, we investigated their action on ionic channels of adult rat dorsal root ganglion neurons. It was found that the two toxins did not affect Ca2+ channels (both high voltag...

Expression, Purification and Docking Studies on IMe-AGAP, the First Antitumor-analgesic Like Peptide from Iranian Scorpion Mesobuthus eupeus

Scorpion venom contains different toxins with multiple biological functions. IMe-AGAP is the first Analgesic-Antitumor like Peptide (AGAP) isolated from Iranian scorpion Mesobuthus eupeus. This peptide is similar to AGAP toxin with high analgesic activity, extracted from Chinese scorpion and inhibits NaV1.8 and NaV1.9 voltage-gated sodium channels involved in the ...
